Opera - Kan Yasuda’s version of Madame Butterfly
The first performance of “Madame Butterfly,” in which the stage is composed entirely of abstract sculptures by Kan Yasuda, took place in 2000.
In Torre del Lago, a suburb of Viareggio where Puccini lived, there is an open-air theater with 3,200 seats where the Festival Puccini is held every year.
The festival has a series of collaborations between opera and sculptors called “Scolpire l'Opera” (Sculpting Opera), and Kan Yasuda was chosen as the sculptor for the first installment of the series.
Since its premiere, performances have been held in Tokyo, Nagasaki, Kobe, Wiesbaden, Germany, and Baltimore, USA.
In 2024, the 100th anniversary year of Puccini's death, it was performed again at an outdoor theater.
